Position Summary
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will serve as a technical leader responsible for evaluating complex engineering drawings, developing manufacturing solutions, supporting government and commercial proposals, and providing engineering expertise throughout the product lifecycle. This position plays a key role in new product development, manufacturing support, supplier qualification, ERP implementation, and customer technical support while ensuring compliance with military specifications, industry standards, and quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and interpret complex engineering drawings, Technical Data Packages (TDPs), military specifications, and customer requirements to support manufacturing, procurement, and quoting activities.
- Develop manufacturing plans, bills of materials (BOMs), routings, and cost estimates for machined components, mechanical assemblies, and defense-related products.
- Lead engineering reviews of customer solicitations and prepare technical responses for Government and commercial proposals.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers and cross-functional teams.
- Support the implementation and continuous improvement of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system through engineering data management, BOM creation, routing development, and product configuration.
- Perform contract reviews and identify technical risks, engineering exceptions, and opportunities for process improvement.
- Prepare and submit Product Approval Requests (PARs), engineering change documentation, and technical deviation requests as required.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and sales teams to ensure products meet customer requirements, schedules, and cost objectives.
- Source suppliers, evaluate supplier capabilities, obtain pricing, and provide technical guidance during supplier selection.
- Support procurement by reviewing technical requirements, issuing engineering recommendations, and assisting with purchase order technical content.
- Ensure compliance with applicable military standards, ASTM, NAS, ASME, and other industry specifications.
- Interface directly with customers, government agencies, and suppliers to provide technical support throughout the program lifecycle.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on manufacturing efficiency, cost reduction, quality, and process standardization.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Minimum of 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably supporting manufacturing or defense-related products.
- Strong understanding of machining, fabrication, materials, tolerancing, and manufacturing methods, including materials, heat-treating, and other processes.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and Technical Data Packages (TDPs).
- Experience developing manufacturing processes, bills of materials, routings, and cost estimates.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with customers, suppliers, and cross-functional teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is a plus.
- Experience supporting the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) or defense contracting industry.
- Familiarity with Government Military Specifications (MIL-SPEC), ASTM, NAS, ASME Y14.5 (GD&T), and other applicable industry standards.
- Familiarity with CMMC requirements and cybersecurity practices within the defense industry.
- Experience working with ISO 9001 and/or AS9100 quality management systems.
