Senior Staff Accountant

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Salary: $75,000 - $90,000 annually
About the Role
We are seeking a driven, detail-oriented Senior Staff Accountant to join our growing organization. This role is ideal for an accounting professional with a strong technical foundation who is eager to expand beyond transactional accounting and take on increasing responsibility within the finance function.
The Senior Staff Accountant serves as a critical bridge between day-to-day accounting operations and higher-level financial reporting and oversight. This position works closely with the Controller and plays a key role in month-end close, account reconciliations, budgeting support, financial reporting, and process improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
General Ledger & Transaction Oversight
- Supervise and review transaction-level accounting activities, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Fixed Assets, Payroll Entries, and General Journal Entries.
- Serve as the first level of review for accounting staff, ensuring transactions are accurately coded and properly documented.
- Monitor general ledger activity for unusual transactions, errors, or misclassifications and initiate corrective action as needed.
Month-End Close & Reconciliations
- Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations, including cash, prepaid expenses, accrued liabilities, fixed assets, and intercompany accounts.
- Investigate and resolve reconciliation discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Escalate significant issues to the Controller when appropriate.
- Maintain the month-end close checklist and ensure all deadlines are met.
- Prepare month-end financial schedules and variance analyses for management review.
Budgeting & Forecasting Support
- Assist with the annual budgeting process, including coordinating departmental submissions and consolidating budget information.
- Perform monthly budget-to-actual variance analyses and identify key drivers impacting financial performance.
- Maintain budget tracking reports and respond to budget inquiries from department managers.
Financial Reporting & Controller Support
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Support external audits and tax preparation activities by organizing workpapers and responding to auditor requests.
- Manage the company's lease accounting portfolio in accordance with ASC 842, including:
- Recording right-of-use (ROU) assets and lease liabilities
- Maintaining monthly amortization schedules
- Coordinating with operations to identify and classify new or modified lease agreements
- Participate in accounting system implementations and process improvement initiatives.
- Assist with regulatory filings, lender reporting, and board-level financial packages as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related business field with accounting coursework.
- 3-5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a corporate or public accounting environment.
- Previous experience supervising accounting transactions and/or junior accounting staff preferred.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Experience with MAS 90/Sage 100 is a plus.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule as business needs require.
