We are looking for a detail-oriented and dependable Materials Specialist to join our team at our Minneapolis location. The ideal candidate will have experience in inventory management, logistics, and forklift operation, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, 24/7 shop environment. This role involves managing materials, ensuring inventory accuracy, and supporting operational needs to keep our processes running smoothly.
Minimum Qualifications for a Materials Specialist
- High school diploma, GED, or at least 2 years of recent and relevant work experience.
- Strong mathematical skills and attention to detail.
- Prior experience in logistics, shipping/receiving, and inventory management.
- Forklift operation experience and proficiency with shop equipment.
- Ability to work effectively in a warehouse/shop environment.
- Reliable attendance, a positive attitude, and the ability to work well in a team.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
Typical Responsibilities for a Materials Specialist
- Manage inventory control in a 24/7 shop environment, ensuring material accuracy and availability.
- Pull and issue materials for shop use, ensuring proper documentation and tracking.
- Perform daily cycle counts and address inconsistencies in inventory.
- Forecast material needs for in-shop and inbound locomotives.
- Perform quality control on shipments, resolve transportation conflicts, and arrange LTL/Expedite shipments.
- Utilize multiple software systems to order, receive, ship, and track materials, including hazardous materials.
- Read mechanical drawings to identify needed materials.
- Operate forklifts and perform daily inspections.
- Process sales, warranty claims, and repair cycle assets.
- Maintain warehouse organization and cleanliness.
- Provide timely support to other shops by fulfilling material requests and ensuring accurate transactions.
- Prepare materials for shipment and assist in physical inventory counts.
Physical Demands for a Materials Specialist
- Standing and walking for extended periods on hard and uneven surfaces.
- Walking up and down stairs and climbing on/off locomotives.
- Fitting into small or tight spaces as needed.
- Wearing required personal protective equipment (hard hat, steel-toe boots, ear plugs, eye protection).
- Performing tasks that require physical stamina and flexibility.
