About Us
The Backrooms is a modern internet-based horror mythos that has become a big cultural phenomenon. It began as a single image shared online and has since grown into a vast universe of stories, levels, animals, and games. It is a new type of digital folklore, generated not by a single author, but by a collective imagination powered by the Internet. The Backrooms' history tells the narrative of how a meme turned into a Backrooms Game myth, as well as how teamwork and creativity can turn a simple concept into a global trend.
The Backrooms concept began in May 2019, when an anonymous user responded to a topic on the website 4chan by posting an unnerving image. The image depicted a yellow, stained, dimly lighted office space with carpeted floors, fluorescent lighting, and an unsettling sense of desolation. Another user reacted to the image with a brief description of the Backrooms: "If you're not careful and noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms." This message detailed a weird other reality consisting of infinite yellow halls, a steady hum of lights, and a sense of isolation and fear.
